Despite what you might think, I don't use DOW ETFs as my primary US exposure. I use a combination of ETFs and Mutual Funds. Mutual funds especially allow me to dollar cost average with ease.

Here's my favourite S&P500 ETF - iShares Core S&P 500

And My Favourite Canadian-Based US Index Mutual Fund is TD US Index e

For Gold space exposure, I really like RBC Global Precious Metals Series D fund. The MER is low, and I find they have consistently good stock picks which beat the indexes handily. Notice how low the risk is compared to the category.

For Emerging Markets Exposure, I really like RBC's offering as it has beaten the indexes over the past couple of years.

For International exposure, I like iShares MSCI EAFA ETF as a simple solution that covers the developed world in europe and Asia but outside of the US, Canada and China.

In Terms of Fixed income, I am really on the fence.

I don't like fixed income in general because the returns are just garbage right now. But if I had to choose, I would research individual bonds or buy good olè GICs, which are about the safest investment you can make in Canada.

Canadian banks are also doing something interesting where they are giving you guaranteed principal protection with the option of locking in gains from equity investments after two years. Well timed (like getting in near the end of a bear market), this could be a profitable and simple investment vehicle.
